Donald TAN, MD

Professor Donald Tan is a senior partner at Eye & Retina Surgeons (ERS), Singapore, and heads the Eye & Cornea Surgeons division of ERS. A founding doctor of the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), Professor Tan went on to helm SNEC as Medical Director of SNEC from 2008 to 2014.  He was also Director of the Singapore Eye Research Institute, was previously appointed as the Arthur Lim Professor at the Duke-National University of Singapore Medical School, and currently remains as Clinical Professor.

Professor Tan is a corneal specialist and clinician scientist who has contributed to over three decades of clinical and translational research and education in corneal transplantation, refractive surgery, and myopia control therapy, devising new devices for endothelial keratoplasty, and new techniques in deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty, as well as in osteo-odonto keratoprosthesis surgery and refractive surgery.  He has published 575 peer-reviewed scientific articles and 18 book chapters, with 33,792 citations and an H-index of 101.  In 2007, Professor Tan formed the Asia Cornea Society (ACS) as its first President, and remains its Secretary General.  Professor Tan has won over 40 international awards, became the first international President of the Cornea Society, and was inducted into the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis in 2018.  Professor Tan has also pioneered the use of low dose atropine (LDA) for myopia control, with five pivotal ATOM clinical trials, and LDA today is the current standard for treatment of pediatric myopia progression.
